CV / BIO
Alejandra España, studied at La Llotja, Barcelona, (2002) and earned a Bachelor’s degree at ENPEG (2002-2007). She obtained JC FONCA scholarship, in 2006 for painting and in 2014 for graphics. In 2009 she obtained an Artist Residency at Banff Center/FONCA. Her work has been exhibited individually and collectively on various occasions in Mexico and in group exhibitions in countries such as the US, Canada, Austria, Peru, Colombia, France, Spain, Slovenia, Germany, England and Venice, as well as in various museums and spaces, among which are the Museo Rufino Tamayo, Museo Carrillo Gill, Museo de la Ciudad de México, Museo Nacional de la Estampa, Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, Casa del Lago Juan José Arreola, Museo Experimental El Eco, Berkeley Art Center CA, SOMArts Cultural Center SF, and Museo de Jaén inValencia, Spain, among others. In 2013, her work in animation was awarded the VI National Biennial prize for Visual Arts of Yucatán and obtained the Artistic Residencies grant, FONCA/AIR, in Vallauris, France. In 2014 her painting was selected in the 1st National Landscape Biennial of Sonora. She has given workshops on graphics and painting in several places in Mexico such as the Centro Cultural La Curtiduría Oaxaca, Centro de las Artes of San Luis Potosí, to name a few. Her book “There Was Perhaps”, Malpaís Ediciones, was presented in 2018 in the Adamo Boari hall at the Palacio Nacional de Bellas Artes. In 2019 she produced her most recent artist book “Eon Loop”, at the Taller El Ojo Peludo, Oaxaca, which was also presented at the IAGO Oaxaca Institute. During her stay in Oaxaca, she met the master painter Aguri Uchida and took Japanese painting classes at CaSa while doing a co-edition of engraving at the Sangfer Workshop. In that year she began her approach to tapestry with artisans and artists from Teotitlán del Valle and exhibited individually in Articulo 123, CDMX. In 2020 she exhibited individually with White Cremnitz Gallery during the 8th Salón Acme Art Fair, CDMX. Her painting won the acquisition award of the XIX Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial, 2020. In 2021, she exhibited at ZsonaMaco with the Guadalajara 90210 Gallery, along with her individual exhibitions “Aqui y Ahora”, El Taller 65 Gallery, CDMX. And her most recent exhibition “Luminosa Oscuridad”, with CAM Gallery. In 2022 she presented her work at ZsonaMACO with CAM Gallery. She is currently a member of SNCA (FONCA Grant), and has been since 2021. In the summer of 2022, she presented her individual exhibition “Voces de Sombra” at the Juan Soriano Sculpture Garden Foundation, with Marek Keller, Owczarnia, Poland. In 2023 she presented her last individual exhibition “Jardín Particular” at the CAM Gallery and participated in VOLTA, NY Art Fair, and Positions Art Fair Berlin with CAM gallery. In 2024 she presented her SNCA project “Semillas de Arena y Mar” in the Ex Convento Betlehemita, Veracruz, as well as “En El Sueño, La Vigilia”, an individual exhibition and intervention in the permanent rooms of the Museum Franz Mayer. In the same year she participated in ZonaMAco Art Baja California and ZonaMaco CDMX with CAM Galería, where she obtained a residency award at Casa Wabi, to take place in 2024. It is part of the “No Name” exhibition for the fourth time and exhibited a renewed version of the exhibition “Semillas de Arena y Mar” at IMJUS, CDMX. Her work is found in international collections such as that of the Consulate of Foreign Relations Foreign Affairs of Washington, (2021), Berkowitz Contemporary Foundation (2021), Tara Westover (2021), Joshua Sobel (2020), Arthur Zegelbone (2020), Valeria Luiselli (2017) the Getty Conservation Institute (1997) in the United States and the Rufino Tamayo Museum (2020), VI National Biennial of Yucatán (2014), Museum of Art of Sonora (2015) among other private collections.
Alejandra España, estudió retrato en la escultura en la Llotja, Barcelona, (2001) y la Licenciatura en artes plásticas en la ENPEG (2002-2007). En 2006 es becaria de Jóvenes Creadores FONCA, en la disciplina de pintura y en 2014 en gráfica. En 2009 obtiene la Residencia Artística en Banff Centre/FONCA en cerámica. Su obra se ha expuesto de forma individual y colectiva en diversas ocasiones en México y en países como EUA, Canadá, Austria, Perú, Colombia, Francia, España, Eslovenia, Alemania, Inglaterra y Venecia así como en museos y espacios culturales entre los que destacan el Museo Rufino Tamayo, Museo Carrillo Gill, Museo de la Ciudad de México, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca, Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, Museo Nacional de la Estampa, Casa del Lago Juan José Arreola, Museo Experimental El Eco, Berkeley Art Center C.A., SOMArts Cultural Center S.F., Museo de Jaén, Valencia España. En el 2013 es premiada en la VI Bienal Nacional de Artes Visuales de Yucatán en video y obtiene la beca de Residencias Artísticas, FONCA/AIR, Vallauris, Francia en cerámica. En 2014 su pintura es seleccionada en la Primera Bienal Nacional de Paisaje de Sonora. Ha impartido talleres de gráfica y pintura en distintos lugares de México, como son La Curtiduría Centro de Artes Visuales, Oaxaca, el Centro de las Artes de San Luis Potosí, entre otros. Ha ilustrado para Reporte Sexto Piso, editorial Alias y editorial El Naranjo. Su libro “There was perhaps”, Malpaís Ediciones se presentó en 2018 en la sala Adamo Boari del Palacio Nacional de Bellas Artes. En 2019 realiza una estancia en Oaxaca y produce su más reciente libro de artista “Eon Loop”, presentado en el mismo año en el IAGO Oaxaca y toma clases de pintura japonesa con la pintora Aguri Uchida en el CaSa a la par que realiza una coedición de grabado en el Taller Sangfer. El mismo año inicia su aproximación al tapiz con artesanos y artistas de Teotitlán del Valle y expone de forma individual en Artículo 123, CDMX. En 2020 expone con la Galería White Cremnitz en la 8ª Feria de Arte Salón Acme, CDMX. Su obra obtiene el premio de adquisición de la XIX Bienal de Pintura Rufino Tamayo en 2020.
